Despite the increasing variety of measuring instruments, the main “assistant” of the specialist in the installation and operation of fiber-optic systems is an optical tester - without exaggeration, the most common working measuring instrument. The tester is used for input control of optical cable parameters, its installation, acceptance tests of the cable system, control of the output parameters of active equipment and maintenance of an operating line. The advantages of this modest device are ease of use, small dimensions and weight, autonomous power supply and relatively low cost. The tester provides a sufficiently high measurement accuracy, stability of parameters during the entire measurement time, is easy to use, compact and economical.
For reliable testing of optical fibers, the tester should be selected in accordance with the active equipment of the computer network. So, for example, if single-mode active equipment and, accordingly, a single-mode cable are used for data transmission, then the measuring generator must also be single-mode.
